Canine Good Citizen/Therapy Dog 6 Weeks $125 for repeat students ($150 for first-time Pet Coach students with prior approval)
For dogs who have already completed Basic Obedience or Puppy Kindergarten, this course takes basic skills to a more accomplished level, and prepares the family pet to take the American Kennel Club's CGC (canine good citizen) test. This test is available to all breeds and to mixed breeds, and dogs who pass the 10-point exam will receive certification from the AKC, and will be entitled to include the letters "CGC: after their names. The test was designed to reward responsible dogs and owners for being able to demonstrate good canine behavior in a public setting, and is recognized by many landlords, insurance companies, dog parks and hotels as evidence of a well-trained dog.
The course covers the ten points of the CGC test:
1)Accept a friendly stranger 2)Sit politely for petting 3)Appearance and Grooming 4)Walking onLoose Leash 5)Walk through a Crowd 6) Sit and Down/Staying in Place 7)Come when Called 8)Reaction to Another Dog 9)Reaction to Distraction 10)Supervised Separation
Dogs are also prepared for the additional requirements of most therapy dog evaluations:
Walking past food on the floor Reaction to medical equipment Reaction to loud, aggressive or disoriented people Visiting a patient
The course includes the cost of the Canine Good Citizen Test, which is given by The Pet Coach several times a year. Referrals to therapy dog evaluators will be made on request.
